Who Can Be Trusted in the 2016 Presidential Campaign?

Remember the scene from a 1967 Disney flick? Kaa, a python with a sinus problem locks eyes with the man-cub. The twirling orbs accompany the snake’s hypnotic song. “Tru-ust in me-e.” Call it coincidence but the new hi-tech remake of Jungle Book just opened three weeks ago. Are you wondering who can be trusted in the 2016 Presidential Campaign?

Wait! Don’t hit close. This isn’t another promotion for any candidate. The increasing turmoil and stress of the campaign led to a Trust search. The findings offered comfort and encouragement.

Whatever happens in the next four years, we don’t have to worry.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jer. 17:7-8 NIV)

Studying the issues and candidates’ promises can make voting confusing and overwhelming.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Prov. 3:5-6 KJV)

“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” (Ps. 143:8 NIV)

If I genuinely desire to vote God’s choices on the ballot, the Lord will direct me.

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” (I. Jn 5:14 NIV)

“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” (PS. 145:18 NIV)

Worried about what friends or family will say when they learn how I voted?

“Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” (Prov. 29:25 NIV)

”So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’” (Heb. 13:6 NIV)

The promises of the politicians sound like they’re offering just what America needs.

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (I. Jn 4:1 NIV)

Who knows if the politicians intend to keep their promises?

“would not God have discovered it, since He knows the secrets of the heart?” (PS. 44:21 NIV)

“He [Jesus] said to them, ‘You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts…’” (Lk 16:15 NIV)

Concerned about a financial downturn if the wrong party wins the White House?

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” (Heb. 13:5 NIV)

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:19 NIV)

Who should I trust to make a positive difference in the country?

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans.” (Ps. 118:8 NIV)

Though political pundits offer bleak forecasts, God’s Word encourages us to trust Him.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you [God].” (Ps. 56:3 NIV)

“You [God] will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” (Isa. 26:3 NIV)

Conclusion

There’s only one answer to the question: Who can be trusted in the 2016 Presidential Campaign? God alone.

If we seek God with our hearts, He will direct our vote in a way that will fulfill God’s plans. Our first obligation is to choose candidates with a Biblical worldview, but when this appears to be lacking, we ask God, Who knows the hearts of the candidates, and mark the ballot accordingly.

If we listen to the speeches and read the promises with our hearts set on voting as the Holy Spirit directs us, we can enjoy the confidence that we pleased the Lord. Regardless of the outcome, we can trust the Lord in the midst of the unconventional 2016 Presidential campaign.

Feel free to share other Scriptures that have encouraged you during this lengthy campaign. I’m always looking for more.

  1. Thank you Dannie for bringing the election around to Truth. Some Believers are saying they will not vote this time, missing the point that God is still in it. We have that responsibility as citizens and the Lord will lead us to whom He wants in office. God can use anybody to bring about His will for our country.

    1. Thank you very much, Carroll! I, too, believe avoiding the vote is not an option for Christians. We need to believe in God and His power, not decide for ourselves to let it drop.
